Geography of Maui
Get to know the layout of Maui. A basic Guide to navigating around on your Maui vacation.
To get to know your way around Maui, first you must get a perspective. We have a classic one for you. Image a Peanut in the shell, one nut is bigger then the other. Well the big one to the south is Mt Haleakala or The House of the Sun. The smaller one to the west is the West Maui Mountains. With the majority of the vacation destination areas are to the west and south and the remote areas and rainforests are toward the East (Hana). You will arrive in the middle of the nut in Kahului. This serves as the industrial center of the island. With shopping malls, department stores and drive thru's you will find it easy to find your way around. If you ever get lost on Maui, first look up and see which part of the peanut you are on.
Road To Hana Maui
Can You Survive the Road to Hana?
From Kahului East, you will see things get a little more country, but when you take the North Shore, things get a little scary! 56 One Lane bridges and hundreds of hairpin turns make this road known as the "Divorce Highway"

Guide to Vacationing on South Maui
Over 300 days of sunshine sound good to you?
You've got to think of the small towns of Maui like many other beach towns on the mainland, has One coastal road, and one main highway connecting a few small beach towns. There is a wet side and a dry side. Some of Maui's most beautiful beaches are here on the west side of Maui. The main difference you will find, in Maui, is the most people that live in Maui, work more or less in part for tourists! So, feel free to ask questions and get to know your surroundings. South Maui was once not even on the map when it came to Maui nightlife, but things have changed. Now, Kihei boasts the "triangle" which has dancing, bars, pubs, and eateries. Of course some fine shopping too.
Makena Big Beach
The State Park near the end of the road.
One of the most remarkable beaches on Maui, with white sands, crystal clear water and the most beautiful multi-island views. Be careful of two things when going to big beach. Number 1. The shore break. You may see locals skim boarding, but the wave crashes right onto the sand. This is why Big Beach is AKA "Break Neck Beach". and number 2. If you walk a little too far to one direction you may find "little beach" AKA the "Nude Beach". Need we say more?
